Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Do I need a separate ECU license for each engine?

    • Yes, each engine requires a unique ECU license for precise calibration. However, the USB Tuning Interface can be reused for multiple engines.

### Instruction: Testing a Mercury Outboard Before and After Tuning

#### *Preparation*
1. *Flat Water Conditions*: Ensure the water is calm and flat for consistent testing.
2. *Trim Tabs*: Fully retract (raise) the trim tabs to avoid interference during the test.
3. *Mercury Autotrim*: Disable the Mercury Autotrim system as it may negatively impact results.

---

#### *Testing Procedure*
1. *Baseline Setup*:
   - Start with the engine fully trimmed down (lowest position).
   - Note the *maximum RPM* and *speed* while running at wide-open throttle (WOT).

2. *Incremental Trim Testing*:
   - Press the trim button *up for 1 second*, allowing the engine to slightly lift.
   - Record the *new RPM* and *speed*.
   - Repeat this step incrementally until there is *no further speed increase* (even if RPM continues to rise).

   > *Tip*: Stop trimming when speed levels off, as additional trimming will only increase RPM without further speed gains.

3. *Avoiding Issues*:
   - Ensure trim tabs remain fully retracted.
   - Confirm the autotrim is still off during testing. If these systems are active, performance gains may be reduced or inconsistent.

---

#### *Comparison Testing*
1. Conduct the above test with the *stock software* installed on the engine.
2. Repeat the same test after applying the *tuned software*.
3. Compare results for RPM and speed at each trim increment to identify performance improvements.

---

#### *Expected Outcome*
- Post-tune, you should notice higher RPM and speed gains across trim increments compared to the stock setup.
- Ensure consistent water and engine conditions during both tests for accurate comparisons.

By following this structured approach, you'll clearly see the differences tuning makes to your Mercury outboard's performance.
